Why do people say it’s a good thing to owe?
Main Post:
Every year my husband and I owe. Thousands. We are not the most financially literate people but when we tell people we owe they say it’s a good thing. I don’t understand why it is a good thing...can someone explain? Or help me figure out how we can not be owing every year?
Top Comment: The responses will use the word "interest" but just forget about that for one moment. You work for money. You have exchanged time, which you will never get back, for money. Do you want as much of your money that you have earned now, to pay the bills which need to be paid now, or do you want to wait to have it back a year from now?

OWE: The future of Chinese wrestling and potentially the future of wrestling.
Main Post:
Yeah, apparently Google Translate is pretty shit. They only have 4 Million views. Check this comment for clarification
Some of you may have heard of OWE (Oriental Wrestling Entertainment) that is making waves in China. Their debut show has had nearly 400,000,000 views since it was uploaded online in February. That is right. Four Hundred MILLION views. Something WWE and John Cena speaking barely audible Mandarin could only dream about.
It is a promotion based out of Shanghai, China with a wealthy film financier funding a promotion from the ground up with ridiculously high end production values with state of the art training facilities for the wrestlers.
Speaking of the wrestlers, they are all local Chinese wrestlers who just so happen to be Shaolin Temple Kung-Fu Students who happen to be some of the most athletic people in the world. Problem is, they didn't know wrestling existed 9 months ago. So what do the promotion do? They hire one of the greatest trainers in the world. The decade long Ace of Dragon Gate, CIMA.
CIMA, and Dragon Gate, are arguably the guys most responsible for modern US indy style of wrestlers thanks to influencing a generation of wrestlers with the legendary Triangle match that won the WON Match of the Year in 2006 and was awarded 5 stars by Meltzer. After this match CIMA went on to invite the best wrestlers in the US and Europe to Kobe, Japan where he trained them and sent them back home. They include:
- Ricochet
- Neville
- Sami Zayn
- Matt Sydal
- Jack Evans
- Apollo Crews
- The Young Bucks
- Johnny Gargano
- Austin Aires
- Kevin Owens
- Chuck Taylor
- Rich Swann
- Tony Nese
- Roderick Strong
- Mark Haskins
- Luke Harper
Not a bad list to help train and develop, yeah? Now imagine CIMA training two dozen Shaolin Monks how to work with the help of current Dragon Gate wrestlers T-Hawk, El Lindaman & Takehiro Yamamura.
With 9 months of training they are already capable of moves like this and defying gravity with just two matches under their belt:
- Over the top rope double stomp 1
- Over the top rope double stomp 2
- Perfect 630s
- Step up assisted 450s
- Perfect Double Handspring Space Flying Tiger Drops
Two of the best students from the OWE dojo, Gao Jingjia & ScorpioX2, have already debuted for Dragon Gate in Japan and will be wrestling in Las Vegas this weekend for Future Stars of Wrestling. That is how confident CIMA is on these guys already.
Get in on the ground floor of some absolute insanity and follow this promotion. There is a great article by @NuclearConvoy where is expands on the Chinese pro wrestling scene with a section on OWE half way down this page. So follow him and the promotion itself on Twitter
They have 3 hour version of their debut show available here (skip to about 15 mins in) and the condensed and heavily edited show with 400 Million views here
Have fun and keep your eye on OWE.

What the fuck, 400 million?
And they've got CIMA as their trainer? Why have I never heard of this before, thanks a lot OP.
Seems really promising, I'll probably have to make some time to have a look at what these guys are doing, this looks like a pretty big deal or at least it's becoming one.
Edit: Ok nvm it's 4 million, thanks u/Cokeada, still seems cool as hell.
What's going on with people saying they owe money after filing for taxes instead of getting returns this year? Did the something change in the Tax law from last year?
Main Post:
There have been a bunch of people who have been complaining on twitter and on reddit about how last year they got a thousand dollars in returns but now they owe the IRS a lot more even though their salaries haven't changed
example: https://twitter.com/DennisMJordan/status/1092784259864109057
As far as I know the tax law went into effect for the year of 2017 and no changes have been made since then. So, people's taxes should be the same this year as last unless their salaries went up. But a lot of people complaining are saying their salaries are still the same. What happened between last year and this year? Or did I just misunderstood the tax law that was past?

The link below will give you an overview of the tax changes. It was sold to people as putting more money back in people's pockets, which it did, to some degree. But now that tax time has come around, people are finding out that they owe more taxes than before due to some of the changes in the plan.

Lessons learned from the girl who owed 11,000 on her tax return
Main Post:
So two years ago I was filing my tax return and was excited to see what my tax refund would be after working at my very first adult job for a whole year. I remember clicking excitedly through TurboTax and then getting to the final page where it said 11,000 OWED. I had never done my own tax return before so I figured I messed something up and had my mom come over and do it by hand. She got the same result and immediately asked to see my paychecks.
Turns out I was only having about 5% of my paychecks withheld for taxes. I hadn’t noticed how little was being withheld because it was my first adult job and I was blissfully ignorant and enjoying the big paychecks. When I had filled out my W4 I remember being confused and the HR guy saying “Don’t worry you can always change it later jus put whatever”. I can’t even remember what I put down on that form but i really fudged it up. Then I just let it slip out of my mind. Big mistake.
So I freaked out for a while, posted on this subreddit, took the advice of u/these-things-happen , made an initial payment of as much money as I had in my bank account and got myself on a payment plan of $350 per month. Whenever I had any extra money from overtime and sidegigs I made online payments to the IRS. My recent tax retund got taken to finally pay off the remaining amount last week so I AM OFFICIALLY OUT OF DEBT TO THE IRS. I’m so happy to be done with it.
Anyways to help any one from making the same dumb mistakes as me here’s my advice on what I learned. For you advanced PF’ers out there this will seem like common sense but hopefully it helps someone somewhere.
- The basics: the lower your withholding rate the more taxes are taken from your paycheck. If you overwithhold (put a lower number on your w4 than you need to) you will get a bigger refund but then are giving the IRS an interest free loan all year when you could be using that money to pay stuff off. If you underwithhold (put a higher number on your w4 withholding than you should have) then you may owe up owing the IRS on your tax return and you may not have been prepared to pay it.
- Always use the IRS Withholding Calculator to determine what to put on your W4). Update it through your HR at any time and especially if anything big happens (get married, get a second job, have a kid). Take your withholding very very seriously.
- Check your paychecks from time to time to calculate the percentage of how much is being taken out in taxes and know your state/city tax rate to make sure you’re on track
- If you do owe on your refund don’t be afraid to call the IRS. They are actually ridiculously nice and helpful when you call them for help - set up an installation agreement right away if you can’t afford to pay what you owe.

I'm glad it all worked out for you.
Now that the balance due is paid in full, you should consider requesting to Abate the Failure to Pay penalty.
If I recall correctly, you owed for year 2016. Assuming you have a good history of compliance for 2013 - 2015 (filed and paid timely, or filed refund returns), you should automatically qualify under First Time Abate criteria.
Unfortunately, interest can't be abated for FTA or Reasonable Cause criteria, but, if the penalty is removed, the interest will be reduced accordingly.
Give IRS customer service a call toll-free at 1-800-829-0922 M - F 7am - 7pm local time. Let the CSR know you received your notice that the balance is paid, and you want to request the penalty abatement.
If all goes well, you should get a check in the mail in about 4 to 6 weeks.

Well German here ... you figure it out.
Just got out of prison and owe SO much money...
Main Post:
I went to college and graduated but went to prison soon after about 18 months ago. I just got out on parole and am looking at the aftermath of my finances. I'm getting so many letters and calls from so many different companies I don't where to even begin...
I know I had 3 credit cards, two from wells fargo and one from capital one. Apparently capital one sold off my debt a while back but wells fargo still has mine? Student loans are all over the place. I know I took out some personal loans through discover but I'm lost as who are all the companies (or just one company) that holds all my regular student debt from the university. I know at some point my loans started coming through another federal company cause of some changes in law but I'm completely lost. I just got a big ol pink letter saying my student loans are about to default.
While I was in prison, some student loan company found me and sent me a letter and I was able to defer it for a year but that time has passed a few months ago. Right now I'm jobless and am crashing at a friend's house but I'm aware of how serious a student loan default is.
This is all beyond what I'm mentally capable of handling right now. I just went through a stock pile of letters that were saved in the past year and am too overwhelmed to even know what to do first. What can I even do? Even if I had some crappy job (I'm engineering by education...) my first concern is a roof over my head and food. I don't even know what to tell these people when I figure out the mess of who the hell a actually owe and what. Please help me... I stayed out of trouble in prison and continued studying and try to study programming to maybe get a web dev job on the side. I want to do the right thing and get out of this endless black hole.
EDIT: I spent the last hour reading through every comment here and I think getting a free credit report to see who I owe since I haven't really had an address or phone would be a good first step. I should have said my debt is mainly student loans (80k public, 20k private...best guess...) and my credit card debt is about $6-7k so I'm really iffy about declaring bankruptcy but I will at least talk to a lawyer and learn more about the best route to take.
Lastly, I got a lot of positive PMs and comments and even that small boost from a message from an internet stranger gives me hope when I let something like this bring me down. I hope one day I can post an update saying I got a great job, beat the statistics, and give hope to other felons who are trying to do the right thing. It was definitely a life changing experience and has changed my views about the prison system in general. Thank you very much.

Forget about the bills. I don't say that often, but your first priority is getting stable employment, shelter, food, and lights. The accounts are in collection already, many of which have been discharged. Your credit is likely poor already. There is no sense in stressing out about this AT THIS POINT IN TIME. It will only hinder you.
Just did my 2018 taxes and we owe. How do I avoid this in the future?
Main Post:
I just finished doing our 2018 tax returns. Married filing jointly, both of us have 2 W2s each. I had a job change right in the middle of the year, and my wife taught an extra class in the summer. Total income was $130k. After the student loan interest deduction and the standard deduction, puts us at a tax liability of around $14k. We only paid $12k, owing $2k now. Was this an outcome of me having changed jobs midyear? How can we avoid having to owe next year, with no foreseeable employment changes in 2019?
Thanks.

Just follow this link to the IRS Withholding Calculator.
It shows you how to fill out your W-4 to get the smallest Federal refund for your specific circumstance.
AITA for not giving someone money I owe them after they lied about how much I owe
Main Post:
Today I was driving to Taco Bell with a couple friends (C and J) for lunch and people gave us money because they didn’t have the opportunity to go themselves. The order came out to be more than I could afford so I cut the drinks, nothing else, and explained I’d pay everyone back the money for their drinks.
During the car ride back I say “no one eats anything until we get to class so we can figure out who ordered what and split it with E, A, and B.” I told C to hold the bag. Halfway through I hear C smacking going “they fucked up this taco but it’s good, it’s like a taco wrapped in a tortilla” so I yelled out “you fucking idiot that was B’s food” and he admits he ate other stuff too
I pull over, look through the bag and there was a fuck ton of papers empty papers, but there was still food left. I take it from him and put the food on the floor by my feet and say “the rest is for B, A, and E. Why the fuck did you do that?”
When we get back we were late for next period and we explain what happened, so B, A, and E can split it however they feel is fair and then I’ll calculate to pay them back after they take what the want. I trusted they wouldn’t lie. B waits until A and E are done, A and E said that there was only 2 tacos in there. That didn’t seem right because I saw my nachos and the bag felt heavy, but maybe I’m wrong. B ended up with 1 taco, I saw it personally, didn’t see what A and E ate.
After school I just decided to check the trash for the bag, I dig through the bag and see exactly what I imagined, even more wrappers than I saw in the car and my nacho box was ripped open and picked over.
I was pissed. C needed a ride home, and although I was mad that he didn’t verify the food was his I gave it to him. He asked to stop at this ice cream place and guess who’s there? A is there with her friend but E is nowhere to be found.
When I walk in I say “Hey A so I saw the half eaten nachos in the trash, you’re not getting your money back for lying” she called me greedy, and said the nachos were gross so she shouldn’t be expected to pay for them and that she deserved her money back.
I explained that in my perspective if she lied about the nachos, A and E could have lied about anything, and there’s no longer a way that I can trust how much they say I owed them, so there’s no way I’m paying her for lying.
I decided to call E right there and have the convo in the shop. I explained that they lied to me and ate more than one taco, so they won’t get their money back. But it’s not even just because I’ m greedy about money it’s because they lied and tried to get a free lunch out of it. I decided to give B the money he’s owed plus A and Es money just to prove I’m trust worthy with paying people back. I will not reward A and E with my dollars
C and I order our ice cream and then sit right next to A and her friend and don’t say a word. That’s basically the whole story.

This is a ridiculous situation and you're all being immature. Next time don't order or pay for anyone else since apparently your friend group can't handle it.
